How Deep is Deep Tissue Massage? Here's what you need to know:

This form of massage can affect the deeper structures of the body much more effectively than a relaxation massage. 'Deep' pressure is all in the eyes of the beholder - deep for you may be too deep for me! Here's what you need to know!

What exactly is a Deep Tissue Massage?

The biggest difference between a deep tissue and a relaxation massage, is probably what you’re thinking right now – one is deep, while the other isn’t! At least this is true when it comes to the amount of pressure.

This form of massage can affect the deeper structures of the body much more effectively than a regular relaxation massage.

Which means that if you’re feeling might ‘sore’ and ‘tight’ in hard to get places like your upper and lower back – a deep tissue massage might be what you’re looking for!

Similar to a relaxation massage, deep tissue massage uses many Swedish Massage techniques. This particular type of massage involves elements of effleurage, petrissage and tapotement to name a few techniques, that many bodyworkers around the world have been utilizing for centuries despite the term being coined in 1868.

Swedish massage involves a form of oil, gel or lotion as a medium to lubricate the skin, for smooth, gliding movement that maintains continuous contact between the therapist and the patient.

If you’re looking to try out a deep tissue massage for the first time – don’t be intimidated! Our therapists will work with you to find the perfect pressure that YOUR BODY feels as deep tissue.

Let us know what your questions are!

When should I come in for a Deep Tissue Massage?

If you’re someone who feels a longing for deeper pressure, or don’t seem to benefit from a more gentle massage – a deep tissue may suit you better. Beyond that, a massage with a bit more pressure could help resolve the following and even more!

  • Low Back Pain
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Neck and Shoulder Pain
  • Chronic Strains and Sprains
  • Whiplash
  • Soreness and aches
  • Shin Splints
  • Sports-related injuries

It’s important to let your massage therapist know both in your health history and in person about what you’re coming into the massage for! If you’re not sure about whether your condition is something that can be addressed with manual work – contact us and ask one of our massage therapists for free!

It's also worth noting that 'Deep Pressure' is different to everyone - that's why it's always important to let your therapist know what your preferences are and what your perception of deep is to you! Your Massage Therapist will ensure that you're always comfortable and satisfied with how the treatment is going!

You may also be asked about your diet, sleep, exercise habits and other valuable information that could indicate what type of treatment may work best for you!

This information is imperative for the therapist to make an informed and rational decision when deciding on the ideal treatment plan for you.

Once all the necessary information has been collected, the therapist can begin the treatment session in the most safe and effective manner possible.

A treatment session may include a few or even all of these techniques:

  • General Swedish Massage
  • Dry Cupping
  • Nerve Flushing
  • Trigger Point Therapy
  • Joint Mobilizations
