All About:
Relaxation Massages

Looking to reduce some overall stress & tension in your mind, body and soul? Relaxation massage may be exactly what you're looking for!

What exactly is a Relaxation Massage?

Anyone and everyone should occasionally receive massage therapy of any form – and the most popular and sought out form of massage is a relaxation massage.

A relaxation massage is almost like what it sounds like – a massage that’s meant to induce rest and relaxation in a patient.

There are many types of relaxation massage, but the most well-known and arguably most-loved is Swedish Massage. This particular type of massage involves elements of effleurage, petrissage and tapotement to name a few techniques, that many bodyworkers around the world have been utilizing for centuries despite the term being coined only in 1868.

Swedish massage involves a form of oil, gel or lotion as a medium to lubricate the skin, for smooth, gliding movement that maintains continuous contact between the therapist and the patient.

What should I prepare for before the massage?

What should I prepare for before a relaxation massage?

Don’t worry, you won’t need to study anything or do any intense research!

First things first, the massage therapist will ask you about what concerns you have and how’d you like them to be addressed, as well as any other background information they may require before being able to begin the massage.

Some of these things may include:

  • Going through your medical history with you
  • Screening questions related to any potential infections or contagious diseases
  • Figuring out what concerns you may have that you want addressed in the massage
  • Asking what articles of clothing you’re comfortable with removing for the massage
  • General massage etiquette

Once these important items have been addressed, the next step is to begin the actual massage!

Your massage therapist will leave the room while you undress to your level of comfort and slip in between the massage sheets on the massage table in the position (face-up, face-down or on your side) your therapist has advised you to go in.

They’ll make sure you’re ready to go by asking to come into the room to begin the massage.

At this point they’ll begin the massage!

What should you expect during the
relaxation massage?

Relaxation Massage Therapy techniques involve:

  • Petrissage
  • Effleurage
  • Tapotement
  • Joint Mobilizations
  • Compressions
  • Vibrations
  • Rocking
  • Stroking

The techniques that are used, and how they’re used it dependent on the therapists’ personalized treatment style.

This doesn’t mean, however that your massage therapist will be rigid in their treatment style; communication between you: The patient, and your massage therapist will be vital to maximize the benefit you get out of your massage.

What should I expect after the massage?

Make sure to hydrate with some good ol' H2O!

Make sure to stay hydrated post-relaxation!

After the massage, the therapist will cue you that today’s treatment is over, and will proceed to leave the room for you to change back into your clothing.

The Massage Therapist may give you the go to leave and rebook any appointments you may want for the future, or they may ask you to wait in the room to check up on you post-massage!

You may feel light-headed and dehydrated, so be sure to grab something to eat and drink plenty of water after a massage!

Take your time leaving the clinic, and if you are feeling light-headed, dizzy or anything of the sort, make sure you take some time to rest before heading home if you don’t have anyone driving you.
